Diving, snorkelling and kitesurfing in Vilanculos

Warm water, a protected archipelago, a shallow lagoon and reliable winter winds — Vilanculos packs an unreasonable amount of water sport into one small town. Here’s the menu.

Snorkelling

You don’t need a tank to see the good stuff here. Most island day trips include snorkelling at Two Mile Reef — shallow, clear and packed with reef fish, with regular turtle visits. If you’ve never snorkelled before, this is a gentle place to start: warm water, sandy entries and guides who take their time.

Scuba diving

Dive centres in town run daily boat dives to the reefs around the Bazaruto Archipelago, from easy coral gardens to deeper walls and pinnacles, plus PADI-style courses from beginner to advanced. Diving runs year-round; visibility shifts with the season and the tides, so ask the schools what’s firing when you’re here.

Kitesurfing on the lagoon

When the southerly trade winds arrive in the winter months — roughly June to September — Vilanculos becomes one of the friendliest kitesurf spots in southern Africa. The lagoon is shallow, flat and warm: ideal for learning, brilliant for freestyle. Schools in town offer lessons and rentals; at the right tide you’ll share the water with dhows, not crowds.

Ocean safaris and whale season

Boat-based ocean safaris look for dolphins, turtles and seabirds year-round — and from around July to October, humpback whales migrate along this coast, often visible from the boat and sometimes from the beach. A sunset dhow cruise, drink in hand, is the gentlest water sport of all.

Planning it

We’re not a dive school — we’re the family guesthouse that knows them all. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll point you to the right operators, help with bookings, and have a hot shower and a seafood dinner waiting when you get back. Reef-safe sunscreen, please: the corals you came to see will thank you.
