By air
Vilankulo Airport (VNX) sits about ten minutes’ drive from the town centre. Direct regional flights connect it with Johannesburg (around two hours), and domestic flights link Vilanculos with Maputo and other Mozambican cities. Routes and days change with the seasons, so check current schedules with the airlines — and tell us your flight time on WhatsApp so we can help arrange a pickup into town.
By road from Maputo and the south
It’s a proper road trip: roughly 700 km up the EN1 coastal highway from Maputo — a long day’s drive with fuel stops in Xai-Xai, Maxixe or Inhambane. At the Pambarra junction you turn east for the final 20 km into Vilanculos. Long-distance buses and chapas run the EN1 daily; comfort varies, adventures guaranteed. Ask us about current options before you travel.
From Zimbabwe and the north
Coming from the north or from Zimbabwe via the Machipanda/Mutare side, you’ll join the EN1 and head south, crossing the Save River before reaching the Pambarra turn-off. Allow more time than the map suggests — road conditions on some stretches change season to season.
Arriving in town
Vilanculos is small and friendly: ten minutes after landing you can have your feet in the sand. We’re in Bairro 5 de Congresso, right in the centre, close to the market and about a 12-minute walk from the beach and the dhow jetty. Message us on WhatsApp when you’re near and we’ll guide you (or your driver) straight to the door.
When to visit
The dry season from April to November brings sunny days and mild nights — prime time for the islands. December to March is hot and humid with occasional heavy rains. Whatever the month, the kettle is on and the rooms are cool.
